Situated on the northern loop of the Vaal River, Vereeniging falls within the Vaal Triangle and is about 60 km from Johannesburg and in close proximity to Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg.
Vereeniging is known as an area with many major industries, alone responsible for manufacturing cables, farm equipment, bricks, tiles and processed lime. While a large part of the town is dedicated to manufacturing, many of them also make a living from farming and the nearby coal mines.
Light-heartedly known as the place in South Africa with the most vehicle dealerships per square metre, the city is probably best known for the Treaty of Vereeniging, responsible for bringing the Second Boer War of 1899 to 1902 to a close. The memorial which marked the spot, on which the treaty was signed, now rests at the city library.
Vereeniging consists of 29 suburbs, of which 7 forms part of Three Rivers:
Since 1999, Vereeniging has been part of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, along with Vanderbijlpark and the smaller Three Rivers.
