The name Mossel Bay, however, can be credited to Dutch explorer Paulus van Caerden in 1601, inspired by a cave in which he found a collection of mussel shells. This rich history can be seen in the historic buildings dotted throughout the town, including the nearly 200 houses which were built by Cornish stonemasons a century ago.

The first ever post office in South Africa is also located in the town and is still used to sort post from.
