With the unique distinction of being South Africa’s youngest town - only officially becoming a town in 1955 - Welkom is by no means a dot on the map. The second largest city in the Free State, Welkom which was established around gold mining is still very much an industrial town which has retained its country charm.

One of the first things you will notice about Welkom is the ease of traffic flow - with 33 large traffic circles, no traffic lights and the minimal use of stop signs the “traffic circle city” has become the basis of many international studies. Traffic jams on a Monday morning won’t be something you will have to contend with.

Due to the fact that the city was completely planned out it boasts with an large quantity of green areas, gardens and towering shady trees - making residents and visitors feel welcome in Welkom!
