A quintessential English village on the west shores of Knysna that is in sharp contrast to Thesen Island on the opposite bank.
Belvidere grew around the Holy Trinity Church that was built in the mid-1800's by Thomas Duthie on his farm, Belvidere. during his retirement.
The residents of Belvidere works incredibly hard to retain the original English village atmosphere. Architectural guidelines have never been formalised, however, all the residents past and present have kept true to the style of the village.
The development also introduced cul de sacs for an intimate village atmosphere, and narrow gravel roads to prevent a build-up of traffic. A ring road, rather than a single main road through the village, reduces the amount of traffic to the area.
You can expect tranquility and a great sense of community in Belvidere - except on Boxing Day when residents play a game of cricket on the village green opposite the church.
It is also worth noting that despite its size and age, the church still has a service every Sunday.
