ABOUT THE RESERVE:
Monate Private Game Reserve is in the Thabazimbi Municipal area of the Limpopo Province, situated approximately 2km north-east from the rustic bushveld town of Rooiberg.
It is an enclosed natural area of approximately 3220 hectares, approximately 60km north-west of Bela Bela and approximately 32km south-east of Thabazimbi. The areas surrounding Bela Bela and Thabazimbi are renown for numerous and beautiful game farms, with well-known larger reserves such as Marakele, Mabula, Zebula and Mabalingwe located nearby.
The reserve is operated on ashare blocksystem near the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and provides a welcome getaway to the bushveld for shareholders and their guests.
The reserve has been privately owned since 1992 by a group of approximately 40 shareholders.
Here, conservation and recreation intertwine, offering residents and visitors alike a tapestry of meticulously managed game, diverse picnic spots, bird hides, serene dams, and meandering streams.
Game found in the reserve include giraffe, kudu, zebra, waterbuck, gemsbok, mountain reedbuck, red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, nyala, eland, bushbuck, roan antelope, etc.
Numerous varieties of smaller game are also found – warthog, duiker, steenbok, klipspringer, scrub hare, banded mongoose, slender mongoose, porcupine, aardvark, tree squirrel, etc. The reserve currently has a bird species list of approximately 220.
Leopard, lynx, genets, black-backed jackal, and brown hyena occur naturally in the area. Predators on the reserve are crocodile, brown hyena, and leopard. Other potentially dangerous animals such as hippo and black mamba are also present. Due to their nature, crocodile and hippo are mainly confined to the water and leopard, brown hyena, and snakes are normally shy and reclusive. It is relatively safe to walk and cycle on the reserve if one keeps within the reserve rules and regulations.
