Considered by many as the fastest growing eco-tourism spots in South Africa, Thabazimbi has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a mining town.
The name Thabazimbi means “Mountain of Iron” after rich iron ore reefs were discovered in the area. The town grew and prospered around the mining industry without ever losing the small town charm. Although the huge mountains are the setting for the mine which boasts with one of the largest mining shafts in Africa, from which more than 2 million tons of iron ore are mined every year and hauled by train to Mittal Steel, it still puts a heavy emphasis on nature conservation.
Some of the best game reserves are located in the area and they offer conducted game drives, excellent accommodation, and outstanding cuisine and are easily reached from anywhere in South Africa. Its close proximity to major Gauteng cities is also the reason why the town is popular with weekend visitors.
