ABOUT BRITANNIA BAY:
Britannia Bay is a special seaside village that lies approximately 90 minutes from Cape Town. The village takes its name from a British East Indiaman ship which was badly damaged by a reef in the bay. Rediscovered in January 1998, the wreck of the Britannia has been placed under the supervision of the Council for National Monuments.
This charming seaside village with unspoilt beaches and truly exceptional natural beauty seem to stretch endlessly, boasting pristine white shores and bright blue ocean waters, which are really ideal for swimming. This delightful seaside area is incredibly popular among holiday visitors who have their heart set on spotting whales and dolphins.
Britannia Bay sees a steady stream of Southern Right and Humpback whales for an impressive 10 months of the year. Dusky Dolphins are known to enjoy following boats across the sea and is always a treat to spot the Havenside dolphin as you survey the ocean waters from the beach – these specific dolphins are endemic to the area. Another popular attraction when visiting this lovely bay is taking a trip to Seal Island which is only a 10 minute boat ride out and is perfect for activating like diving and Cray-fishing. A visit to the popular and world-renowned West Coast National Park, one of the world’s most well-known bird sanctuaries, is well worth a visit, as is the Berg River Estuary and the Rocherpan Nature Reserve.
